Artist Talk and Print Viewing with Rosemary Feit Covey and Barry Moser

March 20, 2024

This program at Georgetown University Library will feature experimental printmaker and wood engraver Rosemary Feit Covey in conversation with master wood engraver Barry Moser, her artistic mentor, who will join virtually from his home in Massachusetts. Moser, who founded Pennyroyal Press in Easthampton, Massachusetts in 1970, has published numerous fine press editions of classic literature, and Georgetown's Special Collections has 22 of his titles. His current book project is an edition of Herman Melville’s Billy Bud that has yet to be published. There will be a pop-up display of the work of both artists at the event, along with that of Leonard Baskin (1922-2000), a prolific graphic artist and founder of Gehenna Press, who inspired Moser's work. This program follows from an oral history video with Moser that Covey made last summer entitled A Line a Through It - Leonard Baskin- Barry Moser- Rosemary Feit Covey. The artists’ discussion will last approximately 30-40 minutes followed by Q&A. Then guests will be able to view the assembled works and light refreshments will be served.

Georgetown University Library has over 500 of Rosemary’s prints in its permanent collection. This collection encompasses the entire graphic oeuvre of her work from 1967 to 2010.

Before the Aftermath

September 14, 2023 in Archival Pigment Print

Some art has no literal backstory but instead is part of an internal dialogue, where visual imagery emerges as the outward manifestation of pure emotion. The visual result, the painting, sculpture, etc, is the word and the story.

July 25, 2023 in Archival Pigment Print

As an artist, I never know where my work will end up, if it will endure, who it will influence or if it will end up abandoned.

Are They Real?

June 06, 2023 in Insects, Archival Pigment Print

Are those real insects? Ever since I started working on this piece in my studio at the Torpedo Factory, I have been asked this question. No, these are not real, this was not an insect blood bath.

The Tell-Tale Heart

April 06, 2023 in Collaboration, Chine collé print

A few months ago I was invited to work on a very interesting assignment, design a wood engraving for the Suntup letterpress publication of Edgar Allen Poe's, The Tell Tale Heart. The result was a beautiful letterpress book, printed by Jerry Kelly, featuring my original wood engraving.

Collaboration of mind and spirit

February 07, 2023 in Collaboration, Archival Pigment Print, Torpedo Factory

The wood and resingrave I use for my work has literally grown extinct! Unfortunately for the future of the technique, the materials used are becoming harder or impossible to find. It is increasingly difficult to find the kind of wood used for wood engraving, specifically pear or the more preferred boxwood.

The Black Umbrella

My new work titled The Black Umbrella was inspired by a South Carolina folktale (ghost story) from the 1930’s called Black Umbrella. This tale was primarily passed down verbally in the African American community.
